Familial hypercholesterolemia management

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) has the particularities of a genetic and chronic disease. It is monitored and treated in light of these two things.

It is a genetic condition: it therefore has an impact on a patient’s health, but also on those around them. Screening of family members is therefore important, in order to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease.

Due to significant and prolonged exposure to high levels of cholesterol and the increased cardiovascular risk, the treatment of FH is slightly different to that of non-genetic forms of hypercholesterolemia.

On the one hand, treatment with drugs can begin from adolescence in order to limit as far as possible the patient’s exposure to high levels of LDL-c.

On the other, cardiovascular monitoring is started earlier than for the general population; monitoring is carried out by a cardiologist and thanks to imaging scans such as the coronary calcium score.
